Zoophilia (from ζώον zṓon and -philia) is a sexual attraction to animals. Zoophilia may include sexual acts, but also preferences that only secondarily, sometimes even unconsciously, serve the sexual satisfaction of people. The term was first used in 1896 by the Viennese psychiatrist Richard von Krafft-Ebing in his work Psychopathia sexualis. In colloquial speech, this term is equated with sodomy. Since the revised version of DSM-III (1987), zoophilia has been classified as an unspecified paraphilia (sexual deviations from social norms). Ernst Bornemann (1990, cited in Rosenbauer, 1997) coined the term “zoosadism” for people who derive satisfaction – sexual or otherwise – from torturing animals.
