Anubis was usually depicted as a jackal, and sometimes as a man, but he was always dressed in black, the color associated with desolation and rebirth. Anubis’s primary duties included embalming the body, guiding the soul, and guarding the tomb. In this role, he oversees the mummification process of the dead and is usually depicted in hieroglyphic inscriptions on tombs as the overseer of the funerary ritual for pharaohs and members of the royal dynasty. This is due to the fact that the priest participating in the ritual wore Anubis masks, symbolizing his role as an overseer.
In modern gay Satanic tradition, Anubis resembles a Doberman Pinscher rather than a jackal.
